The Watermelons and...

Melons are great fruit that we enjoy during the summer months. Except for those that live in warmer regions that is (lucky you). But today I am not blogging about how tasty watermelons are or how we should all eat them or what not, I am talking about watermelons in skincare! I first personally tried watermelons on my skin this summer, when I made a homemade watermelon mask just for fun. My skin wasn't exactly at it's best and I felt it needed a refreshment. So I got a pretty standard recipe which I will share with you today.
You will need:
1 cup of chopped watermelon (Eat the rest)
1/2 of a small container of yogurt
1 tsp of Aloe Vera juice and...
a blender!
How simple right? So what you is you blend these together and you apply it generously to skin. Some may want to substitute yogurt for sour cream which will make the mask thicker and less leaky. I used Organic plain yogurt. I kept my mask on for quite a bit, I think nearly half an hour. When I washed the mask off I was amazed with the results. My skin looks so much brighter, and already felt suppler.
That was when our company decided to create the line of Antioxidant Watermelon Facial care items with CoQ10 coming out the first two weeks of January! So to talk a little bit of the products that we formulated, and analytically tested for our great customers: All of these products of course contain Organic Watermelon Extract (Citrullus lanatus). Watermelon extract is abundant in vitamin C and naturally occurring amino acids. Already those are very important aspects for our skin. But that is not all, the extract also supports the UV-stressed immune system of the skin and can be used to prevent photo-aging. Added to that it helps to protect the skin from every day toxins and promotes cell-renewal and elasticity of the skin. Along with Watermelon extracts this line of facial care items is infused with Watermelon seed oil. The oil has a rich composition of essential fatty acids that help to restore elasticity to the skin. It, therefore, is wonderful for all skin types, including dry, oily, acne-prone or maturing skin. So there we go, watermelon is really amazing on the skin. Added to the watermelon, our third main ingredient is CoQ10 which is an amazing natural anti-oxidant. Studies show that CoQ10 can effectively counteract free radical damage and provide significant protection against UVA-induced depletion of cell membrane. In other words, it will prevent damage to collagen and elastin production process and help you avoid wrinkles. CoQ10 is so powerful, it is able to reduce cancer tumors and minimize stroke consequences that are due to suddenly increased levels of free radicals. So when applied topically, it can provide extra protection for your skin and produce a dramatic anti-wrinkle effect. We found this to be a great combination providing great results for wrinkled skin. However even if you do not have wrinkles this is still a great regimen to use because it is so enriched with antioxidants and nourishing fruit oils that it will help you retain young, and bright looking skin naturally. Did I also mention that watermelon extract works great on blemishes?
So the products that we are going to offer are as follows. As always every product is 100% Natural, vegan, and Organic.
  1. Watermelon and CoQ10 Moisturizer - SPF 20 1.7 oz - $32.00 US/$34.00 CAN
  2. Watermelon and CoQ10 under eye gel (For those bags and dark circles) -  1.7 oz  $18.99 US/$22.00 CAN
  3. Watermelon and CoQ10 Gel Cleanser - 5 oz $16.00 US/$17.50 CAN
  4. Exfoliate with Watermelon and CoQ10 - 2 oz $14.00 US/$16.00 CAN
Look out for that...And a message from our team to you...

What are Antioxidants?

Every best friend you know is talking about them. The web is now advertising super antioxidant creams, and gels. But what are antioxidants really?

An antioxidant is a molecule capable of slowing the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that causes our skin to age. Oxidation is mainly caused by smog, pollution, etc. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals, which start chain reactions that damage cells. Antioxidants terminate these chain reactions by removing free radical intermediates, and inhibiting other oxidation reactions. As a result, antioxidants help to keep skin supple, nourished and firmer.

Although oxidation reactions are crucial for life, they can also be damaging; hence, plants and animals maintain complex systems of multiple types of antioxidants, such as glutathione, vitamin C, and vitamin E as well as enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase and various peroxidases. Low levels of antioxidants, or inhibition of the antioxidant enzymes, cause oxidative stress and may damage or kill cells.

All Antioxidant ingreidents from plants like Green Tea and Carrots help keep skin firm, and supple.

Knowing your skin type

How important is it? With natural skin care no product will do any harm to skin, yet some may fit your skin better. How do you decide if you should purchase the Carrots facial cream or the Rose? Well the carrots is best for dry skin and the rose for normal. So what type of skin do you have?

Normal Skin
If you skin belongs to a normal type, the tissue will not reveal any traces of oil. Your skin should feel vibrant, elastic, and supple. Normal skin is the least problematic type. It looks smooth and has a good circulation and healthy complexion. Even with a minimum care, it will look good well into your advanced age.

Dry Skin
If your skin is dry, the paper will be clean, too, but your face skin will feel flaky, dry, and tight after you dry it. Dry skin can easily develop a sallow tone, wrinkles, and fine pores, and it is very prone to aging and irritating. To keep it healthy, you should apply thorough care and use regular treatment with natural masks and moisturizers.

Oily Skin
If you have oily skin, the paper will have spots of facial oil on it, corresponding to the areas of your cheeks, nose, and forehead. Oily skin is problematic – it usually looks greasy, thick, coarse, and shiny, has enlarged pores, and tends to break into acne. A good thing, though, is that oily skin is not prone much to aging and wrinkling. Careful cleaning, minimizing of carbohydrate consumption, and avoiding rich creams can be helpful in improving the quality of oily skin.

The Ingredient that dangerously lurks behind every foaming bath & Body Product...

Have you ever thought of what makes soap foam? Well naturally we would think that is from the process of soap making. A combination of Sodium Hydroxide and Cold pressed cazrrier oils. Yet there is so much soap...shampoo, bubble bath, shower gels, everything. What makes it all foam? The ingredient used is Sodium Laureth or in some cases Laurys Sulfate. It is much cheaper then the alternative we use in our shower gels which is Natural saponified coconut oil. Meaning the traditional way to saponify cold pressed organic coconut oil. Read below to find out the dangerous ingredient which we use daily on our skin and our hair.

A research study by the JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF TOXICOLOGY.

"Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is an anionic surfactant used in cosmetics and industrial chemicals as a cleansing agent. In absorption, metabolism and excretion studies Sodium Lauryl Sulfate had a degenerative effect on the cell membranes because of its protein denaturing properties. High levels of skin penetration may occur at even low use concentration.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate had an LD 50 (Lethal Dose for 50% of the animals tested) of 0.8 to 110 g/kg in rats. A formulation containing 15% caused depression, labored breathing, diarrhea and death in 4 out of 20 animals.

In acute ocular tests, 10% Sodium Lauryl Sulfate caused corneal damage to the rabbits’ eyes if not irrigated or irrigation was delayed. A Draize test of a product containing 5.1% Sodium Lauryl Sulfate caused mild irritation and products containing 21% were severely irritated with no rinse and mildly irritated when rinsed.
Acute animal skin irritation studies of 0.5% to 10% Sodium Lauryl Sulfate cause slight to moderate irritation. Applications of 10% to 30% caused skin corrosion and severe irritation. Solutions above 20% were highly irritating and dangerous. One percent and 5% Sodium Lauryl Sulfate produced a significant number of comedones when applied to the pinna of albino rabbits.

A chronic oral feeding study in rats of 0.25%, 0.5% and 1.0% Sodium Lauryl Sulfate in the diet for two years produced no observable abnormalities except for moderate to severe dermal effects. In mutagenesis studies, rats fed 1.13% and 0.56% Sodium Lauryl Sulfate in the diet for 90 days produced no more chromosomal aberrations or clastogenic effects than did a normal diet.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate was tested for human skin irritation in concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 10%. Open patches were less irritating than closed patches, and irritation increased directly with concentration. For prolonged contact with skin, concentration should not exceed 1%."

Green Tea Applied Topicaly Preventing Skin Cancer?

According to new studies by the American Cancer Secioty Green Tea in Skin care can help prevent skin cancer. Our Green Tea facial cream is enriched with a potent amount of Green Tea Essential Oil, Green Tea Infusion and Green Tea Extract. Read article below for more information.

"Green tea is already thought to protect against some cancers because it contains antioxidants. A recent review of previous studies finds drinking green tea may help prevent skin cancer – and it may even be effective when added to skin care creams.
Santosh K. Katiyar, Ph.D., and colleagues in the department of dermatology at Case Western Reserve University, reviewed several studies about green tea and reports that it may be useful in preventing and treating a variety of human skin disorders. The substances in green tea thought to protect against cancer are called polyphenols, which have antioxidant properties that can cancel out the damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that damage cells'' DNA and as a result can begin the process of a cell turning cancerous.

"Supplementation of skin care products with green tea may have a profound impact on various skin disorders in the years to come," he says."

What you might be using to moisturize your skin...

We went out and bought a most regular Hand and Body Lotion from the drugstore. The packaging and outlook looked great and of course the price was decent. Yet what lurks behind the label? Today we will list the full ingredients of an average day to day body lotion which you may be using on your skin. Firstly just so you know ingredients are always listed in a specific order. The first ingredient has the highest percentage.
In this moisturizer we start with water. You can look up more information on these ingredients on skindeep.com to know exactly what to avoid in your personal care products.

  • Aqua/Water - as most know water isn't a moisturizer, it is simply used to water down the product even in natural formulations.

  • Isopropyl Myristate - Is the ester of rubbing alcohol. Easily absorbed into the derma it is known to moisturize skin. Chemically derived this ingredient is of low hazard to the skin.

  • Isopropyl Palmitate - Derived from Palmitic acid.

  • Stearic Acid - Is the fatty acid which helps emulsify water with oils. It is rated a 3 and has been linked to cancer.

  • Cetearyl Alcahol - It is used to keep products from separating.

  • Cetereth-20 - Unsafe for use on broken skin. Eye and lung irritant. May be contaminated with 1,4 Dioxane .

  • PEG-100- Polyethylene glycols are often contaminated with Dioxane and are linked to cancer in animal studies. Also eye and lung irritants.

  • Sorbitan Stearate - Very skin-compatible ester of stearic acid and sorbitan, used as oil-soluble emulsifier.

  • Sweet Almond Oil - Ah, finally we hope upon a natural ingredient in this formula. Sweet almond oil (Prunus amygdalus var. dulcis) is a great vegetable oil that is one of the most used carrier oils in aromatherapy massage, and this is understandable since it has a fine texture, is easily absorbed, and helps to leave the skin soft and satiny smooth yet it is non-greasy and easily absorbed.

  • Grapefruit Extract - Score! Natural ingredient number 2. Contains lycopene, a potent antioxidant for skin.

  • Glycerin - Natural ingredient #3. Glycerin is derived from vegetables and is a fat which helps retain moisture in skin.

  • Triethanolamine- Also known as TEA this ingredient is known to cause lymphoid, kidney and renal tumors in animals. Skin and eye irritant when used in all dosages. Even low.

  • Propylene Glycol - Present in very many formulations, even in food this ingredient is known to cause eye irritations and conjunctivitis, as well as respiratory tract irritations.

  • Diazolidinyl Urea - is a fine white powder. Diazolidinyl Urea can be found in many cosmetic and personal care product types including eye and facial makeup, aftershave, and nail, bath, hair and skin care products.

  • Fragrance - A synthetic aroma which can cause lung irritations in many humans as well as asthma.

  • Methyl Paraben/Propyl Paraben - A synthetic preservative. Skin and Eye irritant, endocrine disruptor liked to breast and ovarian cancer, envoirnmental contaminant.

  • Vitamin E - Natural ingredient #4, great antioxidant for skin. Look for Natural vitamin E when purchased not synthetic. A helpful hint is that if the vitamin E is clear in colour it is synthetic. Natural Vitamin E is a viscous dark brown.

  • Tetrasodium EDTA - Neurotoxin linked to brain damage in animal studies, caused liver damage, fetal death, birth abnormalities, made from formaldehyde, and approved in todays use in cosmetics and BABY FOOD!

  • C1 17200 - If you see a number like this in an ingredient list it stands for synthetic colorant.

  • Benzophenone - 3 - Associated with photoallergic reactions. This chemical absorbs through the skin in significant amounts. It contaminates the bodies of 97% of Americans according to Centers for Disease Control research. rated a high 8 on Skin deep.

So this is pretty much the ingredients of this regular day to day body and hand cream. Honestly what in the world are we putting on our skin? Out of the 20 ingredients we had 4 natural ingredients meaning that only 20% of this formulation is natural. The other 80% is loaded with synthetic chemicals. Please scan prior to purchasing, after all isn't what we put on our skin as important as what we eat?

Natural Skincare Vs. Synthetic

Many people we have asked don't even know what the term Natural means. Natural Skincare means Every single ingredient in the product comes from nature. No unpronounceable synthetics. We recommend you to quickly scan every ingredient prior to purchasing a product. For many products which indicate being natural are loaded with synthetic chemicals, which can be hazardous to health over years of use. After all nearly 60% of what is applied onto skin is absorbed! Natural skin care products are those products which helps in remedying aging skin problems, dry skin, blemishes cracked skin and wrinkles from the skin. One problem, many people believe that the ingredients in nature don't give as great results as synthetic. Well, what we can tell you is that is a fib. When a product is natural and is formulated correctly with beneficial ingredients it will affect the derma without damaging it. What do you use and why?
