Mineral oil...The bad, the bad and the ugly.

Every Thursday Delizioso Skincare wants to teach you about a nasty ingredient which is found in day to day skincare. Today our second and very nasty ingredient is Mineral Oil. When you hear mineral oil, what comes to mind first? Whether you know it or not, it is in fact Vaseline. That gooey petroleum based gel which is highly recommended to soft and sooth skin. Unfortunately it isn't very great for you but there are alternatives which are actually better moisturizers. The alternatives which are natural are incorporated in all Delizioso Moisturizers like avocado and apricot and cherry kernel. But anyways...let us get to the nasty stuff.

Mineral oil is not only the very main ingredient of Vaseline but also baby oil. It is a refined crude oil from petrochemicals containing neurotoxins which damage the nervous system. That is a harsh way to say it, but its true. It is the same substance that you put in your car engine. It has next to zero nutritional value and is a known carcinogen. An unbiased study released by the Cancer Prevention Coalition in June 2002, contained the following: "Cancer and health experts just concluded reviews that indicate mainstream cosmetics and personal hygiene products including lotions, soaps and shampoos, pose the highest risk exposures to the general public. This risk is higher than smoking."

Despite the risks and intense health concerns, mineral oil is still used in very many cosmetic products. Yet the green movement is huge, thus companies try to hide it on their label by masking it with many MANY different names. Some of the are…

Yikes! That’s pretty crazy right? That’s a HUGE list for one substance so do check those labels.

Speaking of toxic substances like Mineral oil the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), March of 2001 says: "In a study of environmental toxins found in the blood and urine, there were surprisingly high amounts of toxic chemicals found in everyday products like perfume, soaps and cosmetics in the people tested."

John Hopkins University named mineral oil in cosmetics and moisturizers as the number two cause of aging. The result is premature aging and increased health risks like: eczematous dermatitis, contact dermtatitis, folliculitis, oil acne and melanosis. Ingestion of mineral oil products will prevent absorption of Vitamin A. When taken for 2-3 days it can interfere with the absorption of water. Ninety eight percent of skin care products sold in the United Statescontain mineral oil and other petrochemicals.

This refined petroleum product forms a film on the surface of your skin that can not be absorbed. (think of wrapping your face with Saran wrap everyday.) It blocks the pores and the skin's natural respiration. Mineral oil may also cause allergic reactions and dryness. It traps dirt and bacteria and blocks the absorption of vitamins/minerals/botanicals that may be in a product.

Many products on the market day are formulated to moisturize the skin. Unfortunately, most of these products contain mineral oil which not only inhibits these moisturizers but dehydrate the skin. Mineral oil also slows the rate of cell reproduction, which damages collagen, elastin and connective tissues which lead to fine lines and wrinkles.

Delizioso Skincare is a 100% Natural based company and uses oils like: Apricot, Avocado, Argan, Shea, Aloe, Raspberry, and Olive. These pure oils are cold pressed from fresh fruits and nuts and are cooked in cool temperature so that they do not loose nutrients. It’s health food for your skin. Do you see the difference?
